Food Allergies Vs. Food Intolerances

Food allergies, intolerances are becoming more prevalent in adults and children. From 1997 to 2011, food allergies in children increased 50 percent, and more than 15 million Americans suffer from either food allergies or sensitivities. Allergies usually develop in childhood and are life-long afflictions. Food sensitivities and intolerances can develop at any point. High stress and exhaustion can also contribute to food sensitivities, making them more severe.

A food allergy is an immune system response to a particular food or an ingredient in a food. Most allergies are caused by eggs, milk, nuts, shellfish, soy and wheat. Allergic reactions are typically characterized by itching, hives, facial and throat swelling, difficulty breathing, chest pain and dangerous drops in blood pressure. Severe reactions can cause anaphylaxis shock, which is life-threatening and requires immediate medical intervention.

Food intolerances are less severe and typically involve the same foods that cause allergic reactions. Symptoms of intolerance include gas, bloating, headaches and intestinal and stomach pain. Additional symptoms include lower back pain, reduced energy levels, arthritis-like symptoms, insomnia and inflammation of the intestines and body. In children, these symptoms can manifest themselves as ADHD, attention and concentration problems, mood fluctuations and anxiety or depression. These symptoms are not usually life-threatening but can make a person extremely uncomfortable and sick.

Testing and Treatment with our Frankfort Chiropractor

Food allergies can be diagnosed via skin and blood tests, keeping a food diary, eliminating foods and oral food testing. Food intolerances can be diagnosed in the same ways expect intolerances do not show up in blood or skin tests because there is no immune system response.

We offer muscle response testing (MRT) to determine food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities. Muscle response testing is a type of applied kinesiology, which seeks to treat illnesses and diseases by systematically testing the muscles for strength and weakness. In applied kinesiology, it is believed that weakness in certain muscles can diagnose certain organ and gland problems.

MRT involves testing muscle strength before and after certain foods are administered or held. Good foods will cause an increase in muscle strength, and bad foods will cause an immediate decrease in muscle strength. It is a great way to diagnose food allergies and to test for nutrient deficiencies.

If a food is determined to cause muscle weakness, we will recommend that you avoid the food, keep a food diary and note the foods to eat and how you feel after eating the foods. This will help us determine whether or not you have a food intolerance or an allergy.
